Where will you eat lunch on December 5? Deer Valley plans to open that Saturday, conditions permitting. For anyone skiing out of Deer Valley East Village, the answer sits in a temperature-controlled Sprung structure next to the East Village Express Gondola. A permanent lodge was supposed to replace it, but that lodge is now a year behind.
That gap shapes the whole 2026-27 season on the east side. The one new lift this winter loads at East Village. The two new buildings meant to support it won't open until winter 2027-28. Until they do, the resort plans to use the tent to keep skiers on the east side all day. Executive Chef Peter Menteer told the Park Record that part of the plan is to get skiers to come down for lunch and take some of the load off a packed Silver Lake Lodge. Deer Mountain sits minutes from East Village, so that plan points straight at the base nearest the neighborhood.
Hail Peak Express is the headline addition for 2026-27. It runs from Deer Valley East Village to Hail Peak, the easternmost edge of the resort, and opens 200 skiable acres and seven runs that have never been skied before. On September 9, 2026, helicopters set its towers while spectators watched.
The specs, as Deer Valley published them on September 16, 2026:
Pioche Express, the other lift running from East Village to Pioche Point, has 74 chairs and moves 1,800 skiers an hour. Next to Pioche, Hail Peak is the bigger lift, and it serves fresh terrain. One of the seven new runs, "Hill Yeah," honors Hill Air Force Base in Northern Utah and ties into the resort's Salute to Service program.
Hail Peak brings Deer Valley to 4,500 skiable acres, 209 runs and 32 aerial lifts for the 2026-27 season. The resort counts 11 new lifts since December 2024, including Keetley Express, HooDoo Express, Pioche Express, Neptune Express and the East Village Gondola. Most of that growth has happened on the side of the mountain closest to the Jordanelle.
The terrain is arriving faster than the buildings. Park City Magazine had reported that Park Peak Lodge's first floor was expected for 2026-27. Deer Valley's newer timeline moves it to a full opening the following winter, and the East Village base lodge moves with it.
| Facility | Where it sits | 2026-27 status | Planned opening |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hail Peak Express | East Village to Hail Peak | New this winter | 2026-27 |
| East Village Lodge | Base of the gondola | Interior buildout of ski school, rentals and food hall through fall | Winter 2027-28 |
| Park Peak Lodge | Top of the gondola | Core and shell finishing this fall, interiors through the winter | Winter 2027-28 |
| East Village Restaurant | Sprung structure at the base | Returning, per the resort's chef | Operating now |
The Park Peak plan shows what the east side is waiting for. Its first floor, the "Live Fire Food Hall," is planned at roughly 860 seats and should handle about 2,500 lunch guests. None of that is ready this winter. The east side's food service is the same base operation that ran through last season.
East Village Restaurant finished its first season in April 2026. Menteer called it a "discovery year." It ran from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The menu mixed Deer Valley standards like turkey chili and a salad bar with newer items, including sweet potato fries and a cold soba noodle bar where diners built their own noodle salads. Weekend specials went further, with bánh mì sandwiches and quesabirria tacos.
The layout follows the skier. The parking shuttle stops at one of the tent's entrances. On the way to the gondola, the tent opens onto a patio with high-top tables, lounge chairs and bunting like Silver Lake Lodge's. At lunch, a Deer Valley Chicken Shack and a beer trailer serve from that patio.
Menteer said the lack of snow was the obvious challenge last year, and another hurdle was that many people didn't know the restaurant was there. Once skiers found it, they tended to come back. The most common comment was that the inside was much nicer than people expected. Menteer summed up the season plainly:
"All in all, I think this year was very successful. It could have been a lot worse."
The kitchen has a new connection to the top of the resort's dining program. Sam Phelan oversaw the East Village operation as executive sous chef. It was his smallest team, about eight culinary staff and 15 front-of-house employees, working in the resort's newest kitchen. On June 30, 2026, Deer Valley promoted Phelan to resort executive chef. The person who built the tent's menu now runs dining across the resort.
As of early October, the resort's restaurant page still shows East Village Restaurant as "Closed for Season." Hours and menus for 2026-27 haven't been posted yet. If you need breakfast before the tent opens, Double Blacks at the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley lists hours from 6 a.m. to noon.
A lunch spot only keeps skiers at the base if there's enough terrain around it, and the east side has a lot more this winter. Beyond Hail Peak, the resort plans a family snow-feature zone with rollers and berms on Pirate King, a green run off Pioche Express. It also plans flowy rollers on Humbug and a dedicated family area on McHenry. Neptune Express adds a second way up to Pioche Point. When East Village opened, KPCW identified Keetley Express as a base lift and HooDoo as its beginner lift.
Snowmaking should hold that terrain up better too. Southwest of Park Peak Lodge, a new 10-million-gallon reservoir will work with the existing Summit Pump House to pump 10,000 gallons a minute. Together with another 10,000 gallons a minute from Ventana, the east side's system reaches 20,000 gallons a minute. Menteer said the most important thing for next year will be more snow.
The way back to the original mountain is changing as well. The Triangle Trees area, which links Deer Valley's original terrain to the east-side expansion, is being cleared under the resort's forest health plan to reduce natural fuels. The East Village Express Gondola covers nearly three miles to Park Peak in about 15 minutes. Cabins arrive every 12 seconds and have heated seats. Gondola cabins and Keetley Express chairs now have new storage, so crews can service individual cars without shutting down the whole lift.
No parking announcement for 2026-27 had been published as of early October. Everything below comes from 2025-26 guidance and should be checked before opening day.
Last winter, the East Village day-skier lot off U.S. 40 offered 1,200 free spaces, with a resort shuttle to the gondola. The resort estimated about 10 minutes for the shuttle ride. Paid parking ran as a pilot at the Jordanelle lot, not at East Village. Qualifying passholders and carpools of three or more parked there free, though passholders had to register their plates and weren't guaranteed a space. Deer Valley suggests checking live parking availability and says lots are easier early in the morning or after 1 p.m.
Tickets need planning too. Deer Valley limits daily ticket sales and recommends buying ahead. Last holiday season, lift tickets and Ikon reservations sold out through January 2, 2026.
For a car-free option, High Valley Transit's buses are free, and Route 106 is the Wasatch Back Connector. In December 2024, KPCW reported that Route 106 added a Grand Hyatt Deer Valley stop, the first public transit link to East Village. The schedule HVT currently posts doesn't list Grand Hyatt as a timepoint, so check the stop in HVT's trip planner before counting on it this winter.
If you'd like to know which east-side streets and homesites sit closest to Hail Peak Express, the gondola and the routes that lead to them, INHABIT Park City can walk Deer Mountain with you before the December 5 opening. Schedule a Neighborhood Tour, and we'll show you how this winter's new terrain connects to the hillside above the Jordanelle.
